Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

The Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is made up of many spots around Kerr Lake, on the North Carolina side.  Activities include fishing, boating, hiking, camping, and swimming.

When my family goes on vacation, we tend to stay in a location that can be used as a “launching point”. What this means, is we stay in a location that makes the places we want to visit accessible as easy day trips. My experience with Kerr Lake is as using it as one of those “launching points”, we camped on Henderson Point. We chose to stay there because it was about a halfway point between where we lived and the Chesapeake Bay. It also put us in a good location to make a day trip to the Virginia Museum of Natural History. There was very little directly around the recreation area that I noticed though.

The majority of my time spent at Kerr Lake was on one of the campsites at Henderson Point. This means that I can’t speak on the fishing, or hiking, or anything other than it as a campground. The campsite that we stayed at was very clean, well shaded, and flat; things that tend to make staying in a pop-up nicer. At the time the bathhouse closest to us was sort of dated, but it served its purpose. We did learn that the bathhouse down the road where the tent campsites were, was brand new. So we actually ended up driving down there to use the showers since there was no one over there. Another thing that stuck out to me about this location was the bugs. Bugs are a part of going camping, that’s just the way it is. In this particular location, at night the bugs would swarm our lights in and out of the camper. It was alright, just not something I had expected.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the campground. The few issues we ran into on that trip had nothing to do with the campsite or the recreation area in general. Also, those sunsets over the lake were just really pretty.
